Scrappage - Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Do I Get?
At least £2000 discount off the list price of a brand new car or van (up to 3.5 tonnes) which will be first registered to you.

Does My Car Qualify For The Government Scheme?
1/ Must be first registered in United Kingdom on or before 29th Feb 2000 for cars or 28th Feb 2002 for vans, (check the first registered date on your V5 ownership document)
2/ You must have had it registered to you for at least the past year.
(for bereavement transfers to spouse this is reduced to 6 months)
3/ The vehicle must have a valid MOT or one that expired no more than 14 days before the new car order date.
4/ The vehicle must have a valid road tax disc on the day of order or one that expired no more than 14 days before the new car order date. SORN vehicles do NOT qualify.
5/ The vehicle must be legally insured on the day of ordering the new vehicle.
4/ The ownership (registered keeper name and address) details registered on the scrapped car must match the details on the new car.
5/ The new car (or van) purchased must be brand new, first registered to you.

SORN Vehicles?
These do NOT qualify as the aim of the scheme is to get old cars 'off the road' and SORN vehicles are already that. The government logic is that the vehicle may ultimately be scrapped by the owner anyway. So as it currently stands you will have to get the car back 'on the road' to then scrap it!

MOT Just Expired?
You have an additional 14 days to order your new car once the MOT expires (but don't leave it until the last moment though).

Road Tax?
The vehicle MUST have a valid road tax disc on the day you place the order for the new car or one that expired no more than 14 days before the new car order date. SORN vehicles do NOT qualify - you will have to get it back 'on the road' before you can get the scrappage allowance.

Imported Vehicle?
It boils down to the date when it was first registered in the UK as this is still the only date that matters - regardless of when it was manufactured. So a car manufactured in 1980 that wasn't registered in the UK until 2001 will NOT qualify, but a car manufactured in 1998 and registered in the UK by 29th Feb 2000 (or 28th Feb 2002 for vans) WILL qualify.

Do Insurance Write Offs Qualify?
Category A or B write offs do NOT qualify.
Category D write offs ARE eligible as long as all the other requirements are met.
Category C write offs which were written off before April 2003 ARE eligible and may also be eligible if written off after that date depending on it's VIC status.

My car will be 10 years old later on, will I qualify then?
No. The date has been fixed at August 31st 1999

Time Limit On The Scheme?
February 2010 or when the money rus out.

How Do I Scrap The Car?
The dealer will organise the scrappage and may use a company such as CarTakeBack (0845 257 3233) to organise it all.

IMPORTANT:
Take 3 good photocopies of your V5 document showing all the details (page two), a photocopy of your road tax disc and a copy of your MOT certificate, copy of your Insurance, before scrapping the car as these and the C.O.D. (certificate of destruction) will be required to obtain the scrappage discount. A copy of the V5 will need to be provided at the time of order.
