Scrappage - How It Works

To put it simply, you will receive a £2000 discount off the price of a brand new car in return for having your old car completely scrapped.

Firstly, check if you have a qualifying vehicle for the scrappage scheme:

You will need your V5 document (log book) to check some of the following.

1/ The vehicle must either be a car or can also be a small van up to 3.5 tonnes.
Action: If necessary Check your V5 details under Page Two Section 4 - Vehicle Details

2/ It has to be registered in your name and have been so for at least one full continuous year before the order date of the new car.
Action: Check your V5 details under Page Two Section 5 - Registered Keeper and Acquired Vehicle On ...

NOTE: If the vehicle has been transferred to a spouse due to a bereavement then the qualifying period is reduced to 6 months.

3/ Must be first registered in United Kingdom on or before 29th Feb 2000 for cars or 28th Feb 2002 for vans.

Action: Check your V5 details under Page Two Section 4 B.1 - Date of First Registration in the UK

NOTE: Imported vehicles will only qualify if the Date of Registration in the UK is on or before the dates above, regardless of when it was actually manufactured.

4/ The address must be a UK one and the name and address must EXACTLY match the name and address to be detailed on the registration form for the new car.
Action: Check your V5 details under Page Two Section 5 - Registered Keeper

NOTE: If you've moved house and forgotten to update your address details on the V5 you will have to get that corrected first before ordering.

5/ The vehicle to be scrapped must either have a valid MOT at the date of the order of the new vehicle or have an MOT that expired no more than 14 days previously.
Action: Check your MOT certificate.

6/ The vehicle to be scrapped must have a valid Road Tax disc (RFL) at the date of the order of the new vehicle or expired no more than 14 days previously.
Action: Check your Road Tax disc.

6/ The vehicle to be scrapped must have valid insurance at the date of the order of the new vehicle.
Action: Check your Insurance certificate.

NOTE: SORN vehicles (statutory off road notification) do NOT qualify - you will have to get your vehicle back 'on the road' if you want to qualify for the scrappage scheme.

If you are happy that your vehicle does qualify under the above rules:

Once you have chosen your new car or van you can go ahead and order it with the supplying dealership and they will take care of organising the scrappage side of things. You will receive a £2000 discount towards the cost of the vehicle and under the rules this must make the car at least £2000 cheaper than the normal published List Price. In practice you would of course be hoping to achieve an even bigger discount.

The dealer will require you to provide them with a copy of the V5, a copy of the MOT certificate, a copy of your insurance certificate showing your name and address as per the V5, and a copy of your road tax disc. You will also need to provide proof of identity. The scrapping of your car will either be organised at the dealership itself if convenient or they may also arrange for the car to be collected from your address - which will normally be about 3 days before delivery of the new car.

You must NOT organise the scrapping yourself as the dealers have very strict rules they have to follow.
